Pocket PC

Innovative Education Solutions (IES) Group has created a concept with the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (NWMAC) to develop a prototype handheld interpretive device for use by museum visitors to interpret museum exhibitions. The prototype device will have the capacity to display information in text, audio, video, and photographic formats. It will emphasize ease of use - both by museum visitors and by museum staff.

Most previous attempts to use handheld devices in museum settings focused on creating specialized systems designed to meet the very specific needs of a particular museum, or single exhibit. Such a model of information delivery cannot be replicated in a cost-effective manner for use with other museum or even with other exhibits at the same museum. We plan to take a different approach. We begin with the assumption that delivery of information can be standardized for most museums and museum exhibits. Museums and their exhibits can then be differentiated by varying the "look and feel" of the personal interface for the museum or the exhibit.

Moreover, this will require little technical skill for museum staff to load the handheld device with content information relevant to a particular museum exhibition. This concept is currently on the EDA priority list for the Spokane EDC. It is also under consideration for an IMLS grant that IES Group created and submitted on behalf of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians Camas Learning Library.
